Forging with Intention [blacksmith school]

Six different Blacksmithing classes will cover the basics of Blacksmithing and will have a strong focus of forging steel with accuracy and intent. These classes are project oriented with the overlapping of skills so students get to practice each skill repetitiously while creating different items. The classes are for both men and women and no experience is required.
David Norrie has been operating a Blacksmithing studio for 34 years, and has taught part time for 27 years. Now he is opening a blacksmithing school offering 6 weekend classes, 4 one week intensive classes, a welding class, and a found object sculpture class. These workshops will give someone a well rounded set of skills that will enable someone to create quality forged metalwork on there own. David’s teaching is based on the idea of ‘forging with intention’.

Montana State University Farrier School offers an eleven-week program designed specifically for those who wish to pursue careers as farriers. This professional course provides students with the opportunity to obtain a solid background in the field of farrier science through the application of sound principles in a practical hands-on setting. Students will have the opportunity to obtain the knowledge and develop the skills necessary to establish their own practice, qualify for licensing at major race tracks, and prepare for the American Farrier Association Certification exam. Further study in an advanced class is also offered. The Animal and Range Sciences Department at Montana State University sponsors the Farrier Program. The Farrier School, which was established in 1970, receives no state funding and is supported entirely with student fees.

The Forgery School of Blacksmithing was founded in 1986 by Robb Gunter. The new and updated facility can accommodate up to twelve students per class. We are happy to introduce two new programs that will join our existing list of offered studies. The pre-existing, Practical Farrier Program and the Professional Farrier Program have been updated and improved as well. We will no longer be offering the Master Farrier Program but have replaced it with the Advanced Farrier Program and the Internship Program. The Advanced Farrier Program and the Internship Program are two new and exciting programs that share the common goal of lengthening the education time of the modern day farrier. We recognize the demands on farriers and want to better prepare then by increasing their speed, confidence, knowledge, and experience.

Mark Plumlee, CJF, RJF, CNBBT, CNBF, CLS, started Mission Farrier School in 1996, after teaching a conventional program at the local state community college. Plumlee has six farrier certifications from three national farrier associations, so is in a unique position to integrate traditional knowledge with more modern, centered farrier science, that focuses on achieving equilibrium around the coffin joint for an increased level of soundness in horses. Over the last 16 years, Mission Farrier School has educated over 400 graduates worldwide.

Northwest College’s Equine Studies has three farrier options from which to choose, whether your goal is learning to properly care for the feet of your own horse, working as a professional farrier, or operating your own business: Farrier Business Management, Horse Owner Basic Hoof Care, Professional Farrier Certificate.
The three farrier options can also fit together. Starting with the Horse Owner Hoof Care certificate, you may then add more classes to achieve the Farrier Certificate. Finally, if you choose to add classes in business and general education, you will achieve your AAS in Farrier Business Management.
